Ladies, I call upon you for help!

Are you bored this NYE? Marvellous.
Enough is enough. A week and several hours of looking at pictures and swatches and still no decision made. It's time I called upon your opinions to help me make up my mind. This may be a long post, please bear with me.

It all started with the Mac Champale collection. I fell in love with the look of the Caviar Dreams quad.
I fell in love. I don't have any similar shades really and I started dreaming of the light and dreamy eye I could put together with it. Then I saw the reviews and decided not to buy this one but to find something similar with less fall out and more pigmentation.

I also fell in love with this Le Metier de Beaute Kaleidoscope.
But alas, it wasn't to be, we're not getting this in the UK despite my best efforts, so again I started looking for similar products.

Now this is where I need your help. I have a list of several palettes I have fallen for and I can only afford one, or at the most two of them. But probably only one. I've googled endless swatches and I just can't decide.

Now the palette I love the most and is most similar to the Mac Champale quad is this Dior one, Crush Glow:
Which is my top choice. However, it's £39 which isn't a problem, except its sold out everywhere and the only place I can get it is ebay at a tenner more. The swatches are beautiful.

Next up is this, Dior Pearl Glow :

Which my reckoning is a dead ringer for the Le Metier holiday one I really wanted, with the addtion of a purple. I can get this at retail price of £39.

Then there's the Chanel Enigma quad which has been on my list for ages:

But something keeps stopping me, not sure why.

And then while I was searching I found Dior Ready To Glow, which is also similar to the Mac quad:
Not as beautiful as the Crush Glow, and it has a brown it it, if there's one thing I don't need, it's browns, but it is pretty.

And then finally I found another Dior one, Sunset Cafe:
I'll be the first to admit it looks pretty dull, but google image search swatches, it really looks gorgeous and maybe another similar one to the Mac Champale quad.

So please, help me choose. Do I get the Metier-a-like, or one of the Mac-a-likes and if so, which?

Or do you recommend some other palette you think is an absolute must have. All I ask is nothing too dull, I like duo's or shimmers, or unusual colourways, a palette of greys or neutrals that don't do something pretty won't float my boat!

So go, help! And thank you and Happy New Year to you all.

Rodial Glamtox Eyelight Pen

When this shiny appealling looking product dropped through my letterbox I couldn't wait to try it out!

I really love the sleek shiny mirrored design of the packaging but as I mentioned in my review of the Glamtox Night the white lettering is really hard to read. Obviously you can read the large lettering easily enough but you can forget about the small print.

That aside, what you get for your £35 is a brush applicator, which you click the end of to dispense product into the brush.  The product itself is an under eye illumiator and concealer and is apparently full of cooling and moisturising ingredients. I have been unable to find a full list of ingredients.

Actually, this product is lovely, the formula is lovely, it has a lovely consistency and its a great shade for me, it is very pale though, I don't think it would suit everyone. It also does a great job at brightening the eye area.

It's not all fun and games though because after just a few days use take a look at my under eye area. It's not for the faint hearted.
Obviously I can't swear there's a connection. All I can say is I've never had a spot there before.

I stopped using this product immediately and I've not gone back to it, which is a shame since it really seemed nice, but I'm afraid I'm allergic to one of the ingredients perhaps but as previously stated I've not been able to find an ingredient list.

Nice product, just not for me.

Modesty Brown's Beauty Bloggers Best Things

Another week, another nose into a bloggers best things.

This week's beauty blogger letting us in on her secrets is one of my favourite bloggers, Modesty Brown, always classy, never tacky, beautiful products with fantastic reviews you can always trust and a jolly nice person to boot.

If you don't already, I strongly urge you to follow Modesty's lovely blog. http://www.modestybrown.com/

So lets start with some easy questions!

Can you talk me through your daily skin care regimen, which products you use and why?
At the moment I’m trialing some skincare so I won’t mention those items but will stick to my tried and tested regime.

Morning
No.7 Foaming Cleanser
Trilogy Gentle Facial Exfoliator used twice a week
Origins Starting Over moisturiser

Evening
The Body Shop Camomile Waterproof Eye makeup remover (I love this and have been through three tubes)
No.7 Radiance Boosting Hot Cloth Cleanser used with either Eve Lom cloth or flannel
Origins Starting Over moisturiser
Alva Sanddorn Eye Cream

All of the products I’ve mentioned are gentle on the skin. The cleansing products clean without stripping the natural oils from the skin which I think is important. I find the Radiance Boosting cleanser a real pleasure to use.

I also tend to use a face mask once a week. It doesn’t really matter to me which one but I enjoy the pampering aspect. It depends on how my skin is feeling whether I go for a moisturizing treatment or a detox mask. In the evening my favourite cream to use is Nuxe Crème Merveillance and I really need to re-purchase this one.

What shampoo and conditioner are you devoted to?
I admit that I don’t have a favourite when it comes to hair care. At the moment I am using both Louise Galvin SLS free shampoo and conditioner and some Aussie Haircare products that I had before my Brazilian blow dry. I quite like the John Frieda Brunette range too.

What about your top three make up brands generally speaking?
There’ll be no surprises here I’m sure!
Rouge Bunny Rouge
Edward Bess
Le Métier de Beaute

I have a passion for well-formulated, flattering colours and I think all of these cosmetics brands do them very well. I want to look better but with minimal effort and their products help me do that. I don’t have loads of each brand as they’re all quite expensive but what I do have, I cherish.

I should include an honourable mention for MAC too. Although I don’t buy much from MAC these days, I still have a lot of staples from them which I use daily.

Ok some specifics now!

What is your favourite foundation and why?
I’m still on the hunt for my Holy Grail of foundations. I tend not to wear it so much these days and opt for concealer instead. I do rather like Lancôme Teint Miracle though. It has a nice finish and isn’t too heavy.

What is your favourite mascara and why?
This is easier! My favourite mascara is Hourglass Film Noir. It’s actually one that I was sent for review and I didn’t expect to like it that much. It is a really nice dark black and it’s a soft formula so doesn’t make my lashes brittle. The real reason it is my favourite though is because it has never, ever smudged on me. It might not be the most dramatic but I love it for the fact that it has never given me Panda eyes which is a problem I have with every other mascara I’ve ever used.

What one product do you think every cosmetic aficionado should have in their collection?
No specifics here but I think every beauty addict should own a fabulous lipstick colour. You know, the sort that you don’t wear everyday but that makes you feel instantly better when you wear it? For me, that’s an Edward Bess lipstick in Night Romance. It always makes me feel a million dollars even on the worst of days!

I love finding new blogs so please before you go, please recommend three of your favourite bloggers.
Gosh this is really hard. I read a lot of great blogs, the first two are my absolute favourites and this pair make me spend more than I would really like to divulge! Because I love bloggers with a sense of humour, I must recommend you take a look at Facegoop. Probably not a good idea if you like Lush though……

Visionary Beauty
London Makeup Girl
Facegoop
Thanks so much Modesty for answering my questions. I must admit your top three made me chuckle since yes, I would have absolutely guessed! You have impeccable taste. I might have to try out that mascara.

Another Top Products of the Year Post.

 Morning all.

Hope you all had a fab Christmas!

It's one of those times of year where you start reading the same kinds of posts on all the blogs you read and Lady of the Lane is no different ;)

Yes it's time for my top products of 2010 post. It's not comprehensive, and I'm sure as soon as this post goes up I'll think of things I missed out!

Anyway, it's going to be a long enough post already without my rambling on so I'll crack on with it :)

Firstly my top skincare. Without a doubt Estee Lauder. You can find my reviews for these products HERE and HERE. I reviewed the bulk of these products in June and it's December, other brands have come and gone and I'm still in love. I'm on my second Advanced Night Repair Eye stuff and my second Time Zone Moisturiser, the others are still going strong (Advance Night Repair Serum, Perfectionist [CP+] Wrinkle Lifting Serum and Time Zone Eye Cream). I love this stuff so much. Other brands I've tried have been good, but every time I've gone back to this stuff. Honourable mentions must go to Organic Surge for being the nicest High Street stuff ever and to Clinique Laser Focus Repair Wear Serum for being awesome too.

Next up is  Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub.
Been using it for years. Still my absolute favourite and best face scrub. Nothing scrubs me as well or leaves me feeling as clean, nor is so much like a margarita cocktail. You can find my original review HERE.  It's not the faint hearted this. It's not one of those sissy scrubs that have about three soft jojoba beads in about a tablespoon of shower gel, this is salt, lots and lots of it, and it's ROCK salt. Possibly not one for sensitive skins.

Then next is the Alpha-H Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Mask
I won't talk about this in any great detail since my review went up only a few days ago but the best mask I have ever used. Instant results. And worthy of my top picks of 2010.

Now on to make up products, starting with foundation and powder. Actually was a bit tricky as there are actually several foundations that I really love. I have 8 on the go upstairs at the moment. The one I reach for the most though is Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions. My full review is HERE and the bottle is now nearly empty which means it's the one I reach for most often. Great coverage and it lasts a really long time.

Honourable mentions to Lancome Teint Miracle for being glowy and radiant and beautiful and I bought a bottle of Estee Lauder Double Wear the other day (not my first, but the first one that is actually the right shade for me) and I'm smitten.

Then the other product which is a blogger favourite I think is the Mac Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Medium Light which is perfect. It stays put all day, doesn't lean orange, and gives a really natural finish. I really love this!

Then I absolutely have to rate the Mac Pearl Matte Face powder from the Mac in Lilyland collection earlier in 2010. I don't think I reviewed this at the time but I did use it in my contouring video the other day.

I use this virtually daily, either to contour, bronze, or I pick out the individual shades to blush, highlight or even eyeshadow.

I might cry a bit when I hit pan on this one! It's just such a convenient product to have although I'm sure it wasn't remotely popular at the time and I'm the only person I've ever heard talk about it never mind rave about it, but for me it definitely makes the list.

ELF Brow Kit:
I'm on my third. No other brow product compares for me and aside from brushes, the only thing I've ever bought from ELF that I like.

Next up my favourite eye products. Two paint pots. Soft Ochre and Blackground. A late find for me but used daily. The Soft Ochre I use as a base and it is my eyelid colour. The Blackground I use either alone as I do HERE or as a base for dark loose shadows. I love both. They last all day and don't crease on me. I always apply with fingers.

Next is the Guerlain Kohl in Noir. I use this several times a week, it's effective, long lasting and gorgeous. I love all the kohl's I have but Noir is my most frequently used.

And finally for the eye products is Chanel Inimitable in black. I'm on my third one. Again, I have somehow ended up with approximately 10 mascaras, all of which are used in varying degrees, but this is my most used and my favourite.

Finally for make up, Revlon Smoked Peach Lipstick:
Very bright and matte. I love this so much. I love it with smokey eyes especially. My lipstick of the year. And yes thats over and above my Tom Ford.
Nail Products:
I couldn't choose a polish. Too many to choose from! So first up is Mavala Nailactan. My full review is HERE but if you want fab cuticles and strong flexible nails I think you need this.  The other product is of course Seche Vite. It's not perfect, hello gloopy mess and tip shrinkage but I need my nails to dry quickly because I never know when I'll need to pick up a crying 18 month old and touch dry in a few minutes is a godsend. I'm on my fourth bottle this year. It does go gloopy about half way down but I bought a bottle of Restore and a few drops of that and it's perfect again, I also find I can't easily reach the bottom cm or so with the brush so I wait until I have a couple of bottles of gloopy left overs, pour them into one, add my Restore and hey presto, good to go again.

Aromatherapy Associates Enrich Body Butter.
I only recently reviewed this. It's decadent and delicious. I'm saving mine for special occasions in order to make it last. Mmmm. I LOVE it.

Liz Earle Foot Spritzer:
Addictive. The product of the Summer. Will buy this a million times over. Not least because its one of the only foot products that I've ever used that hasn't left my toes damp and invite Athlete's Foot (eeeew). Full review HERE.

Liz Earle Botanical Essence No1 Perfume:
The best everyday perfume this year. Love it and have worn it to death. Always always get comments on it when I'm wearing it :)

And lastly a frivolous item, the Aromatherapy Associates Comfort Candle:
The candle is comforting, but I think it's comforting and very very sexy. If you fancy indulging yourself, you need this. Full review HERE. Honourable mention goes to Connock London for the beautiful Kukui Candle.

So that's it! My top picks for 2010, do you have any of these and do you rate them? Or Otherwise? Or are any on your wishlist? I wonder what will be on the list this time next year, although I don't much fancy doing another post like this, it was a bit stressful!

Last post before I stop for Christmas...

...to show you all what I decided upon for my Christmas Manicure :)
China Glaze Jingle Bells and Ruby Pumps.

Anyway, I'm about to tuck into a plate of party food, before going into the garden with Chloe to sprinkle magic dust so the reindeer know where to land!

Again, have a wonderful Christmas and see you on the other side. xx

So This is Christmas...

Well it's Christmas Eve already. Amazing. And what a year its been bother personally and blog wise.

I want to wish everyone a wonderful Merry Christmas. I'm going to have a few days off and come back in the New Year, maybe sooner if I miss it too much, but will still be reading everyone elses blogs and around on Twitter of course!

I was thinking of doing a favourites of 2010 post and I might still do that if I can get my act together to take photos.

Anyway, I'm waffling, this post is just to thank everyone for their support over the last year and to wish you all a peaceful and happy Christmas and I hope that the weather still allows people to reach their families and destinations. It's still looking unclear as to whether I'll be making the journey to Cardiff to see most of my family. Fingers crossed.

Hope you've all been good girls and boys and that Father Christmas brings you everything you wish for.

The Babylon Lane Tales Beauty Bloggers Best Things Interview

This week my questions are answered by the lovely Elsie at http://babylonlanetales.com/ Her blog is quite new to me but well worth a read and full of photos I just love to look at! If you love an eclectic blog that isn't all about beauty, check this one out.

So lets start with some easy questions!

Can you talk me through your daily skin care regimen, which products you use and why?
Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish
Roc Retinol Deep Wrinkle Serum
Bliss Best of Skintentions Moisturiser
Roc Complete Lift Anti Dark Circle Eye

(I'm not particularly wedded to Roc products but get them uber-cheap as my Dad works for Johnson & Johnson)

I have to admit to occasional slatternly behaviour. I have been known to wake up mascara-glued to my pillow because I've been too lazy to take my make-up off the night before.

Occasionally I also throw in a quick Bliss Triple Oxygen Mask to brighten my skin.

What Shampoo and Conditioner are you devoted to?John Frieda Radiant Red shampoo and conditioner to protect my hair from getting the Mean Reds.

What about your top three make up brands generally speaking?
Nars for cheeks
Clinique for foundation - but not lipstick as their lipsticks smell foul and have the consistency of pate.
MAC for eyeliner gel, lipstick and mascara

Okay, some specifics now!

What is your favourite foundation and why?
Clinique Superbalanced. I've nicely developed a red nose in my old age and this seems to be the only brand that covers it and stops me looking like a cross between Rudolph and an old soak.

And your favourite mascara and why?
I am permanently on the hunt for the perfect mascara. At the moment I am using Clinique's High Impact AND Chanel's Inimitable, both at the same time, which while giving good lash is a costly solution to my mascara quest.

What one product do you think every cosmetic aficionado should have in their collection?Nars Multiple in Orgasm. I love this it gives me a delightful post-coital glow. I wear it with Nars Deep Throat blush. Love the names too, makes an otherwise provincial girl feel just that little bit Parisian courtesan.

I love finding new blogs so please, before you go, recommend three of your favourite bloggers.Belgain Waffling
Paris Parfait
Lost in Manchester

Thanks so much for this Elsie, it's been a pleasure to get to know you better and I like your blog recommendations! Please everyone, go and check out Elsie's blog

Small Mac Lipstick Blog Sale

I was just going through my lipsticks and have decided to get rid of a few. I like them all. They have all only been swatched or at most worn twice, but I either have several similar shades, just don't wear or don't like the formula.

All £10.50 each inc 2nd class recorded postage. Paypal only and sadly UK only. It will take me a while to recover from the nightmares I've had with overseas shipping lately. Sorry folks.

Please note I may not be able to get to a post office until Wednesday next week, although if anyone buys tonight I will try to get to the PO tomorrow, but it depends on the weather (which is not good!)

Usual rigmarole, leave a comment with your email address and I'll invoice you. First come, first served!

Nails of the day and Nails of Yesterday

It's been a while since I put up any of my manicures that weren't swatches of new ranges so here are yesterday's nails along with the nails of today. Starting with today's. A french manicure with a little extra fancy detail. I'm really enjoying the clean look of a french manicure at the moment, it makes a change from all the vibrant colours I usually sport.
And while I'm at it, here is the manicure I removed to do the french. A poorly Konad'd holo :)
So there you have it. I'm just trying to decide what to do for my Christmas Manicure since those tiny green crystals will almost certainly drop off before Saturday. I'm not too good at nail art.

So any suggestions for my Christmas Manicure. I'm not a great fan of green glitter and I have loads of beautiful reds but they seem a bit... boring?

Alpha-H Skincare - A Review

Alpha-H is a brand highly lauded by those in the know but I think fairly unknown by your average Joe. As part of the blogging community I found myself getting swept along with the hype I heard about this brand, in particular, the much loved Liquid Gold.

A month or two ago I was sent, unexpectedly, the following items:
The Balancing Cleanser, Liquid Gold, the Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Mask and the Absolute Eye Complex.

To summarize some of these products didn't meet the high expectations I had and some did but you'll have to read on to find out more.

Let's start by talking about the cleanser. The Balancing Cleanser with Aloe Vera claims to hydrate and cleanse without drying and it's main ingredients of note are Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. 200ml retails for around the £20 mark. So its a great huge tube with a fairly huge price to match. It does a great job though I have to say. I can get into the shower fully made up and leave without a trace of mascara under my eyes. This is really something. I think I've yet to find a cleanser that doesn't give me panda eyes when used in the shower.  Also, I tend not to favour cleansers that you use with water, as my skin always get red and tight after using water on it, but not so with this stuff. A winner of a cleanser and an absolute godsend if, like me, using an eye make up remover in addition to a cleanser seems like too much hard work. Great stuff.

Next up, Liquid Gold. Something of a cult product this is a very highly regarded potion. It promised great things, most notably to bridge the gap between the world of the scalpel and the cosmetics counter. It's a water based rejuvenating treatment, instantly absorbed which allows it to work at a cellular level. With each application, dead skin is lifted away, along with excess sebum, grime and remnants of make up with the aim of leaving smaller refined pores, collagen production reinvigorated and fruit acids claim to kill the bacteria which cause spots.  The main ingredients are liquorice and silk. Liquorice to brighten, dimish age spots and uneven skin tone and silke to bind moisture to the skin whilst improving clarity texture and radiance with its amino acids and lipid oil. Sounds nothing short of miraculous and everything my tired skin could wish for. 100ml is £28.

So you apply this with a cotton wool pad every alternative night and leave on the skin all night. Which I have done religiously. Alas, perhaps my expectations were too high, but other than my skin feeling very soft, I noticed no other improvements. My pores are as large as ever, my skin as congested as ever and this product was no match at all for my hormonal spots. I wanted this to work for me so much and it just doesn't. It really tingles when you put it on the first time by the way, but this fades quickly and doesn't seem to happen with consecutive uses. I have friends who absolutely swear by this product so I am sure that this is just my crap skin to blame and not the product, but for me, it wasn't great.

Next, the Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Mask. Wheat germ oil, rose oil, lavender oil, honey, macadamia seed oil and 15% glycolic acid. The aim is to eliminate dryness, absorb excess oil and it is supposed to be something of a soft peel. Designed to improve fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, sun damage, clogged pores, blemishes, eczema and generally tired skin. Well now we're talking! This really rocks my world. You put it on for 10 minutes, oh boy does it tingle, it tested my limits I have to admit, although its not painful, its just, tingly, but you can FEEL it working. When I wash it off, my skin feels amazing. Soft, clean, nourished, and just fresh. I can't describe it, this is a great product and does everything that I hoped the Liquid Gold would do. Unfortunately it's not cheap, it's £43 for 100ml. Trust me to fall for the most expensive item I was sent. It's worth it though. I've been using it once a week but would love to up this to twice a week, if anyone knows if that's allowed I'd love to know.

Finally the Absolute Eye Complex. An instant pick me up for eyes, reflecting light away from all your eye nasties (puffiness, fine lines etc). It also contains a range of botanicals to tighten and rehydrate.  To be used morning and night and £32 for 15mls this is another product I had high hopes for that didn't meet my possibly over inflated expectations. I'm used to products actually showing signs that they are working, you can see some of my previous product reviews for the kind of thing I mean, fine lines disappearing, wrinkles diminishing, all easily seen in before and after photos... there are no photos this time as there were no results. It felt lovely to apply, cooling and refreshing, but I have other products that do that, if I spent £32 on something I want visible results and sadly I didn't get any. Again, I have friends who swear by this product.

So you see, a mixed bag for me, I love the Liquid Gold Mask and Cleanser and whilst I don't hate the Eye Complex or Liquid Gold, I certainly wouldn't rush out to buy, but you know this brand's reputation goes before it now and I'm one voice in a sea of many many lovers, and I feel certain I'm in the minority group. You need to check it out for yourself! Definitely definitely, if you want to do something fab for your skin, treat yourself to the mask. It is a thing of wonder!

Any Alpha-H products I ought to try? Have you tried the above and loved them? Tell me all about it!

Le Métier de Beauté Le Cirque Kaleidoscope - A Look

Now I've had this for quite some time and I am not sure why it's taken me so long to get round to putting up a post about it. I was keen to get my hands on this because the colours looked beautiful but at £65 it was a big gamble. Fortunately I received this as a gift (not a PR sample I might add) so here we are. My feelings are really mixed on this palette.

Lets start with a huge positive in by my reckoning, when you're looking at pictures of this paletted, you imagine the shadows are the usual size, you know, Mac proportions, but they are not, they are much bigger. Making this palette in total a similar size to my fist. It's substantial and that, by my reckoning goes some way to justifying the cost. Also, I didn't realise until Modesty Brown's post  that the top bit is a mirror, so the lid flips open. Which is neat and I really like it.

Before I go on any further, take a look at swatches of the colours:
L-R Flamboyantes, Spectacle, Enrichissant and Dynamique

I love the colours, on my eyes they transform into something special and I have to say that I've reached for this more than any other palette over the last couple of months. I get a good long day's wear out of them. There is something about these eyeshadows I can't quite put my finger on and it's bugging me and its partly why its taken me so long to write this review but I just don't know what it is! Anyway, its beautiful and the quality is evident as you use them. However, there is one thing I do find disappointing and that's the purple shade, Dynamique. In the pan it looks brighter, blue and more wow, but on the lid its a fairly sheer dull purple. In my opinion, if it had been a brighter shade, the effect would have been really amazing, rather than just nice.

I've been attempting to apply this palette using the Métier technique Couche de Couleur. Which is essentially the layering of the colours. Starting from the top or bottom of the palette, just start layering. I'd really like to know exact placement but haven't been able to find anything so I just bodged it. In addition I've been enjoying using the purple as a liner by spritzing my brush with Mac Fix+ first and applying a damp line. It's still not as vibrant as I'd like but it's pretty. I've not done the last bit in the following photographs.

There are MANY pics because I see different effects in each one and to show you all of these, I think, gives you a great idea of the character of the shadows and the effects of the Couche de Couleur. I urge you enlarge some of the close ups.

So here we go:
So there we have it. Despite my disappointment with the purple I adore this palette and reach for it least every other day at the moment, I love it so much I'm already planning my next purchase.

So what do you think, worth the money? Is this a brand you've tried? Any must haves for me?
