More Rouge Bunny Rouge shopping and swatches...

Before Christmas I did some shopping.

I may have added to my collection a little bit. Just a tiny bit. Just three teeny tiny little eyeshadows and a weeny little liner....

At this point we'll gloss over the cost of that tiny little haul. I find it's best to take the blinkered approach with this kind of thing.

The first thing I bought was the Quartz Eyeliner in Amethyst Essence. It's a lavender shade with silver and blue glitter.

I may have been heavily influenced by the recent Journey Through The Stars look I recently blogged about.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings on the product itself. It's a stunning colour and very beautiful. It also stays put all day. It is however quite chunky with glitter and not as smooth as I might like and if you wear it over a similar shade eyeshadow, say a lilac, or a pink, it is all but invisible on me, except for the glitter. Alone though, it's lovely and so for me, it will be used to either add a touch of sparkle to an eye, but not definition, or alone for maximum effect. It really is very pretty though either way.

The other things I bought were three more of the Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows, after my disappointing colour choices last time, I decided to branch out a little. I liked the products and the colours I bought previously, but two were very similar and one was very pale so I went for three that were a bit different. Mountain Bluebird, Capricious Nightingale and Unforgettable Oriole. Shown here with and without flash to show the different dimensions.
All very pretty colours. Unforgettable Oriole is a glorious, bright wash of pale gold, ideal for highlighting, Mountain Bluebird is a lovely teal toned shade of blue and Capricious Nightingale is a gorgeously girl pink.

Swatches?  Why certainly! Please enlarge to see the sparkle of the liner.
So pu these together with the three shadows and what do we have?
Top  Row:  Mountain Blue Bird, Capricious Nightingale and Unforgettable Oriole
Bottom Row: Tantalizing Lovebird, Gracious arasari and Veiled Lyrebird

And complete Swatches?

Very pretty no?

So now I've shown them all off, now I need advice in using them. You see from the swatches they are all nicely pigmented (Gracious Arasari aside). However, when I apply them to my lids they don't show up like these swatches do, they turn into the sheerest washes of colour. And I want them to look like the swatches do. I've been using a primer of course, but to no avail. I know these are capable of looking bright and pigmented, one swipe of my finger proves it, so how do I acheive that on my eyelid? Any tips gratefully received because I've tried several brushes all to no avail.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Did you try your finger on your lids? :)

  2. Lovely swatches, I have considered the Amethyst liner myself. I think it would look very nice used with neutral colours from your description.

I don't really know how to advise on the eyeshadows. The darker colours that I have; Abyssinian Catbird and Delicate Hummingbird, really pack on a lot of colour. I just use a MAC 239 and press them on. Replica has some of the colours that you have there, hopefully she can advise.

I seem to think the blue is quite sheer though having seen it applied to the lid. I can see your skin through the swatch, even though the colour is bright. You may need a darker base for that one. Capricious Nightingale and Unforgettable Oriole both look very dense though so I'm shocked they won't press on well.

  3. Using your fingers is a good idea. I should have asked, are you applying to the lid and then applying a crease colour with a buffing action? I sometime find that when I do that, lid colour comes off (not just with RBR but with all colours) and I have to reapply to the lid afterwards to maintain the intensity. Could that be the problem?

  4. Hi Doriana, I've not tried fingers because I find it hard to get the colour where I want it with my clumsy fingers! I will try when I want to just wear one colour though.

Modesty, I have no idea what a 239 is and therefore definitely don't have one of those! I have just googled though and have a similar Sigma one. I do press the colour on but obviously there must be some blending and surely an eyeshadow, especially a £22 eyeshadow should be up to blending?

If I don't blend, how do I merge the colours gently instead of there being blocks? I am clearly really thick. I knew I was bad at eyeshadow but I just don't get this!

The Blue is slightly sheer but that's fine, its a lovely colour, I do think the darker base is a great idea though, it hadn't occurred to me so thank you!

More practicising I guess. The colours are really beautiful and it's not their fault I'm applying them so shoddily!

  5. Hi Charlie! Yes, a £22 ought to be up to blending. I do find though with some finishes of eyeshadow (especially frost or sparkly) if you place on the lid and then blend another colour, it knocks some it off. If that is the case, I blend in layers to avoid blocks of colour. If I reapply a little of the lid colour, I tend to do it in the centre of the colour so I don't spoil the effect of the blending. No idea if that makes any sense, I'm no expert myself!

Having said all of that, I haven't had problems blending the AC and DH. I do occasionally get it with Solstice Halcyon but that is quite a subtle colour in the first place and I only reapply as I like to show off the lovely finish and mauve tone.

Hopefully someone else can shed more light on it x

  6. MB. I am determined to get the effect I want from these. Actually the new colours are very pretty sheered out too, which is good, I'd just like to get a bit more punch if I can! I will definitely try yor tip of adding a touch more in the centre after blending.

I think I am spoiled a bit with the Fyrinnae shadows which seemingly blend themselves with one light sweep of a brush!

  7. HI Charlie,
I got the same eyeliner a couple of days ago, great minds and all that!I've only used it once to have a little play, but I liked the subtle effect, used it with the Delicate Hummingbird E/S and was very pretty, also seemed to work quite nicely under the lower lashes. I've never tried an eyeliner like it (wiht glitter etc) so I don't really have anything to compare it to. Good luck with the eyeshadows! X

  8. It sounds like the difference between your finger and the brush might be warmth? Usually if I really like a color and it's too sheer I use a mixing medium to get it to show up a little brighter one part glycerin 3 parts water.

  9. Nice choices, I wanted Amethyst Essence, shame that it is not smooth as I thought it would be like the Tiger eye one, does it look better applied over a black powder?
I find my RBR applie as swatched when I use a base, however I do have very pale skin so things are probably going to show up better on me. I seem to do as Jane does, apply lid shade, apply crease, do require blending then reapply a layer on the lid.
I know if I have shadows that are not applying pigmented I use a BB touch up brush (meant for face but can really pack shadow on) or MAC 214 x

  10. Jennifer, I'm not surprised you got the liner at all!

Blazeno, a medium isn't a bad idea, I just haven't mastered the art of blending when using wet product.

Replica, it's probably just me that find the Amethyst Essence a bit bumpy, it's a horror at all though, so don't be put off! Will have to try it over black, great idea.

I have pale skin too, but I'm going to have a god at reapplying a layer after blending, I don't know why I've not tried it. Thanks for the tips!
