The first tricky thing was choosing a colour. It came down to a nudey shade, Blush Nude and Moroccan Rouge. I adored the look for Moroccan Rouge but decided if I had a lipstick that valuable I wanted it to be a colour I could comfortably wear often, and whilst the Moroccan Rouge is stunning and still a colour I'd love to have, it certainly would be out of my comfort zone for regular wear. I don't want a £35 lipstick that I only wear twice a year, I want it to be a shade that gets used a lot, otherwise it seems... wasteful!
So I already showed you these pictures but here's another little look at the packaging. It certainly looks expensive... but £35 worth of expensive, well you can be the judge of that but I think it looks pretty classy. It's heavy too.
And here's a swatch for you:
Well, it's taken me a while to find a way of making this lipstick work. Nude lipsticks have to be a very certain shade in order for them to work on me but I think I finally sussed it.
Firstly I need a flawless base. It doesn't work if blemishes show through, or too many of my freckles, nor does it work on me with neutral or browny shades on my eyes, it all started to look a little too warm... So finally I tried a good base and black/grey eyes and bingo, a look I was pleased with. My lips also needed completely wiping out with foundation first, this is because my lip line isn't very clear, I have naturally "smudgy" lip edges, which even have some unfortunate freckles along the line, so when wearing lipstick I have to use a good base and draw them in so the line is more crisp. Actually in the following pictures, I didn't use a lip liner at all, the foundation was enough to blot out the naturally untidy lips ;)
And here's the full face. I was a bit worried it might be a bit too concealer lips for me, but actually I think it really works, perhaps it's just pinky enough to stop it being concealer like. Sorry for the picture overload, I couldn't choose which one was best... no doubt as soon as this post goes live it will become glaringly obvious which pictures I shouldn't have put up!
So colour wise I find I'm reaching for this often now I know how to wear it but I'm guessing the biggest question everyone is asking is "is it worth £35?". Well no, I don't think it is. The wear on it is good, it lasts several hours and a little remains after a meal. It feels really moisturising and creamy without feeling greasy, all are great qualities, but it doesn't bear up any better than, for example, a Revlon Colorburst, ok maybe not quite. I reckon I get about three to four hours from a Colourburst, and maybe four to five from a Tom Ford...so theres approximately an hour in it. The finish on all the lipsticks is apparently Semi Matte, which suits me, I much prefer a satin or matte lip to a glossy one. I'd have thought it certainly didn't warrant a greater price than a Chanel Rouge Coco for example.
Having said that, I'm delighted with this, its a really gorgeous colour and if I can find a cheaper one anywhere (Ebay for example) I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy another, it is a lovely lipstick, but no, I don't think I'd spend £35 on one!
Thank you again Jennifer for giving a) such a beautiful lippie, and b) giving me the chance to try something that probably I'd never have experienced otherwise.
The lovely TF on the top of the lipstick are long gone BTW which leads me to wonder how long the whole thing will last!

It does look lovely on you and must be fab to have a £35 lippie but I'm right with you on not wanting to spend that much on one. I'd love to, don't get me wrong, but I can't help thinking about all the other stuff I could get for that!
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice, but I can imagine a stronger colour would really suit you and lift your complexion..
ReplyDeleteNot that you need a lift..? Haa- that came out wrong.
Hi Charlie,
ReplyDeleteGlad you are getting some wear out of it! Looks great on you. I had similar problems trying to get Pink Dusk to work for me, my only nude fom the range. I have to wear quite smokey eyes and flaw less base to not look like one of the walkng dead! For that reason it is my least used lipstck. The shades that really blew me away are Cherry Lush and Pure Pink, as I can stick them on with no other makeup and my face just lights up. For me, those colours are what I am prepared to pay £35 for.
I wish I lived nearer to you then you could come and have a play around with the other colours! They are surprisingly heavy though aren't they? Am very impressed you've managed to erode the TF already, somehing I've yet to achieve! X
Thanks all!
ReplyDeleteCheeky, you know I love bright colours and wear a lot more bright than I do nude. But I like this one, its just harder work!
Lipstick Luvvie, thank you SO much! Pink Dusk looks lovely! I will try and find a bright one on ebay I think! I wish I was close to so I could come and try other shades! xx
I think that you have really made this work well, I think you have enough lip to show off the colour and prove that it is a colour and not just a this-is-really-just-a-concealer-shade-with-a-bit-of-dusky-rose-pigment shade. I also think that you have big enough eyes to show enough of an contrast with the lips. Thanks for doing an inside and outside pic. But as you £35 is a bit steep. Thanks for this. Jan x
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice but I would have loved you in one of the knockout reds too (I loved you in that Ellis Faas red). I finally got my first Tom Ford but I'll admit I got in from ebay rather than paying full price. That as you know came with it's own folly as I waited ages for it.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous and even my other half admired it. I have more on my list but it'll either be a case of asking for them as gifts or more ebay purchases.
Jane x
Fabolous!
