Back in 1992, when I was 18 years old, I heard tell of an exotic perfume called Angel by Thierry Mugler. I didn't know much about it, I can't even remember where I heard about it, all I knew for sure was that it had chocolate notes, was not a cheap perfume and that was about it. I went and asked at every beauty counter in town if anyone had it but all I got was blank looks. I took I trip to Birmingham and asked in all the department stores there, again no one had heard of it. An expensive perfume that smells of chocolate, being asked for by a goth in Doc Marten boots...
I don't know how long exactly after that Angel hit UK shores but I do remember I got my first bottle as soon as I could and a love affair was borne. I loved (and still do) the simple blue glass bottle and I'll wager that in the years since I've perhaps had 6 bottles? I suppose that makes it the most likely candidate for my "signature scent". I've worn it on and off for many many years now in various guises, Angel EDP (several times over), the body lotion, the shampoo and conditioner, Angel Innocent, and my favourite and much missed Angel Garden Stars, Violette Angel (if anyone has this, send it to me, I miss it!). So you see, I'm a fan.
It's a fragrance that provokes strong reactions and there was a period in the late 90's where this became a hugely popular fragrance and some women seemed to have no concept of the the fact that this was an Eau De Parfum, extremely strong and you'd step into a shop or someone would walk past you on the street and your senses and nose would be destroyed by this overpowering scent. During that time I stopped wearing it, but it was probably only a short break of two years before I was drawn back to the fold.
The other thing with Angel is, it smells different on everyone. My Mum says she doesn't like it, she hates the smell of it on her, but there was a time where whenever we got together she'd proclaim how lovely I smelled and ask what it was... always to be shocked it was Angel.
So I'm going on and on, but other than chocolate I've not really explained how Angel smells. That's partly because descriptions of perfumes is not my strong point but I'll give it a whirl. The official description is top notes of melon, coconut, mandarin, cassia, jasmine, bergamot and cotton candy, middle notes of honey, apricot, blackberry, plum, orchid, peach, jasmine, red berries, lily-of-the-valley and rose and base notes of tonka bean, amber, patchouli, musk, dark chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Well, I don't know about all that, what I do get is patchouli, chocolate, vanilla, candy, tonka bean, a smidge of coconut and something oriental, and indeed it does fall into the category of Oriental Vanilla. And I love it. In case you hadn't guessed.
And so as a blogger when the rare chance comes along to review a new version of something you are SO passionate about, you jump at it right? Well I did. I get excited about products all the time, but it's utterly brilliant when something you are really passionate comes your way.
So there's a new Angel in town. Angel Eau de Toilette.
Well lets start with the beautiful bottle. A gorgeous blue circle surrounded by a silver shooting star, magnetised lid and refillable. Beautiful and whimsical as always. And what of the fragrance? I love it! Of course I do. Every Angel fragrance smells overwhelmingly of Angel! The first observation is that is is softer, gentler, less pungent, this obviously makes it infinitely more suitable for those who liked Angel but just felt it was too strong.
The similarities I can note are all the Angel notes, especially patchouli, vanilla and chocolate, but it's somehow less gourmand. I've pretty much worn this every day since receiving the sample and I do absolutely adore it. The only problem is, it doesn't seem to last so long on me...if I put it on at 7am, I can't still smell it at lunchtime but the original version of Angel is SO incredibly strong you can smell until you wash it off (your bedding, your clothes, your skin, whatever) and it's impossible to not compare the longevity!
Gorgeous anyway, and perfect for those who liked Angel but wouldn't wear it because it was just TOO much. For me personally, I'm going to be rocking the EDT in the day and keeping the EDP for weekends! Gorgeous.
The Refillable Spray comes in two sizes 40ml and 80ml and the RRP is £46 and £65 respectively and is out now.
