It's not that I don't want to understand, I really do, but I think the problem is that they all do different things. In short though here's what I do know. BB stands for Blemish Balm, but it's not a spot cream. It provides a small amount of coverage but it's not a foundation. Some, like this Clinique offering, have anti-aging properties. They have primer properties but can be worn alone and have healing properties to help banish blemishes and they nearly all offer SPF.
Clinique's offering provides a fantastic SPF of 30 which is great.
The Age Defense BB Cream is suitable for all skin types and is easy to apply. You use it after moisturising and over your entire face.
It's available in two shades, 01 and 02. I've tried both and 02 was completely wrong for me, far too orange, so I was sent 01 to try out. My initial impression was that it was far too pale...and don't get me wrong it is incredibly pale, but then I am pale and it works perfectly well on my skin, colour wise.
I've heard tell of it having a grey tint and I have to say that when I was blending this into my face I did get a flash of grey which alarmed me at first, once fully applied and settled into my skin I couldn't spot the grey at all.
In terms of coverage, at this time of year this isn't enough coverage for me, never mind my hormones seem to be playing havoc with my skin, more than usual of late, so I'm happier with more coverage, this will however be perfect in the Summer for me, so long as it then isn't too pale. I can't see I'll ever match a shade 02, not unless I fake tan and I don't fake tan.
Here's how my face looks with the Clinique BB cream. I've kept the rest of my make up to an absolute minimum so the focus is on how my skin looks.
It's very natural. All my freckles are showing through and in fact I'd go so far as to say it looks as though I'm not really wearing anything on my skin, which is actually a good thing, well on good skin days it's a good thing. It is SO pale that I could really benefit from some extra blusher, but otherwise it's good.
I do find that my fine lines and wrinkles are less obvious and my skin feels very smooth. I have tried this as a primer also, but since I favour heavy foundations, it's all a little much for my spot prone skin. No, I'll be keeping mine to wear alone on good skin days, particularly in Spring and Summer if they ever come.
Really I don't have many grumbles about this, it's nice, but the main problem is the colours. Having tried both of the available shades I can guarantee that many people will be unable to find a match. Although sheer, they do still impart colour I'm not convinced two shades will fit all.
The All About Age Defense BB Cream is £25 for 40mls and lets hope that more shades will be added in future!

hahaha, I'm undergoing the BB cream phase at the moment, it's beyond my control and I know it'll pass. But it's so much fun doing shopping on e-bay! I suppose I'll give Clinique a go when it becomes available here. I was considering getting the Estee Lauder one, but somehow it seems to me that they are now promoting their old tinted moisturiser as a BB cream.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I've not looked on ebay but now I'll have to. I have the Estee Lauder one here, waiting to be tried so give me a week or two and I'll put a review up!
DeleteI think I like BB creams. I tend to wear them on days when I'm not doing much and I don't want to do my makeup. I'll also wear it to the gym if I'm particuarlly spotty.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to like it but I'm glad I do now.

Yes, thats what they seem great for, those days where you don't want to go the whole hog!
DeleteStill not convinced by these either, they seem quick thick when a swatch is rubbed onto the back of the hand and then disappear to less coverage than a TM when sheered out on the face. Will be sticking with my much loved Moisture Surge TM I think!
ReplyDeleteYes Moisture Surge is fab! On the whole I'm not a TM fan, but that one is great!
DeleteOn behalf of Lovethescents: Never tried or heard of BB. I'm lucky enough to NOT have blemishes anymore so this seems useless. Even more useless is, as you noted, the lack of variety in their colours. I won't even bother. For tinted moisturizers, I love LM, but yesterday tried Armani face fabric....now that is MAJOR love!!"
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Have you noticed if the BB effect has worked on your skin? Has it become any better?
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest and say I haven't, but I've not been using it long enough yet I don't think and I'm not using it daily as it's not enough coverage for me right now sadly!
DeleteMy view on BB cream is that if you want to wear it on its own, you need to have good skin... which you seem to have already lucky you!!
ReplyDeleteI quite like the look of the pale one, only ever tried the Garnier one and even their "light" version was far too orange for my freckly skin!
I really don't have good skin, not usually anyway, but I did save this until my skin was relatively clear because I can't bear having photo's of my bad skin on the blog!
DeleteI have the same BB Cream in shade Asian, but I have yet tried aps.
ReplyDeleteEstee Lauder has something called BB cream. I suppose it's a tinted moisturizer as well. Would be interesting if you do a future review on that because I think EL may be just calling it a moisturizer (can wear under foundation) and not an actual TM although can used as such for those that have perfect skin...
ReplyDeleteI've got the EL one Mari, will review as soon as I can!
DeleteFor the ladies who find that the BB creams here in the US are too sheer, I am an avid BB cream user from brands that are mainly from Asia. If you have light skin, then you may be lucky enough to use the colors that are available from Asia. The BB creams from Asia are WAY better than the ones here and they hold up longer. They have much more benefits and protection than the ones marketed in the US. I am not sure why this is but it's just something that most Asian BB cream users will tell you. Just letting you ladies know that there are other options out there just in case you do not like the one's in US
