Smokers! In Here!

I want to evangelise at you. Today I'm going to tell you all about Vaping and how it changed my life.

I don't know if many or any of you were aware but I have smoked all my adult life. Since I was 16. A twenty a day habit. One before I did anything in the morning, and last thing at night and a couple every hour in between. I never smoked around my kids, but took myself outside to smoke then, so as not to endanger them... but I didn't hide it from them and it wasn't long before Chloe, aged about 3 started walking around the house with a pen hanging out of her mouth pretending it was her cigarette. Disgusting. I could not stop. Over the years I've tried gum, patches, inhalators, all to no avail and I resigned myself to being a smoker for the rest of my (vastly shortened) life.

Don't get me wrong, I liked smoking. I still do like smoking. I like the smell of cigarettes, I like the action of smoking, I like the experience, but I simply didn't want to smoke any more for a variety of reasons. I was scared of dying young and leaving my kids behind, every time I got a cold and cough it stuck around far longer than it should have done, going out in the cold and rain to have a cigarette wasn't pleasant and although I do like the smell of cigarettes I can't bear the smell of stale smoke, and worse, I couldn't bear the thought of other people smelling it on me.

So one night a friend came round and bought with her an electronic cigarette, it looked like she was smoking, there was smoke and everything, except she wasn't. I had a go, it felt like smoking, except it wasn't. It was vapour, and nicotine. It wasn't carbon monoxide, it wasn't benzene or formaldehyde, or ammonia, or acetone or tar or hydrogen cyanide or any of the other vile ingredients you get when you smoke a real cigarette.  It dawned on me that since I loved smoking so much and it was a habit I couldn't stop, then this might just work for me, so when I spotted a deal on Groupon for a E-cig starter kit, I bought it. That was one year ago. The day the kit turned up was the last time I smoked a real cigarette. I've not even been tempted. And that is why I'm evangelical about these. If you smoke, if you fear you'll never give up, then give these a go.

Now there are lots of electronic cigarettes on the market and they all vary slightly. There are different strengths of nicotine and you can plump for zero nicotine if you want to have the sensation of smoking but give up nicotine along with all the other harmful ingredients.

The first brand I tried, looks just like a normal cigarette, with the white section being your battery and the orange filter section being the active bit, and its the orange bit that you need to replace (although the battery also needs replacing every few months or so depending on your use). The orange bits (cartomizers) come in several different flavours, tobacco, menthol, coffee, chocolate, cherry, vanilla... coffee being my favourite and one cartomizer is the equivalent of up to 40 cigarettes depending on your usage and a box of five of these cartomizers is about £9. So... quite a lot cheaper than cigarettes or indeed tobacco.

And so it was that I came to accept the Vapestick as a sample recently. A different type of electronic cigarette.
Sample principle, you buy the cartridges and they fit together with an atomiser and a battery to create something much larger than my previous brand.
I'm loving this one too, in fact, if I'm doing my sums correctly, this one works out a bit cheaper to use as and is just as easy and pleasant. I've no complaints about it all, what I particularly like is that you can sign up for regular deliveries, rather than having to remember to order, you can sign up and receive a delivery automatically on schedules of your choosing. If anything, my only complaint is that the flavours are a little more limited, Original, Tobacco, Menthol and Apple. I must say I am missing my beloved coffee flavour a little.

So I've decided I'm going to keep both of my e-cigs going, I'll keep the fab Vapestick for when I'm at home and the other brand for when I'm out and about because I think I'd feel very self conscious out and about with the Vapestick.

I'm hoping Vapestick consider adding some more flavours to the range soon. But I'll stick with them anyway because I think it's great. I will also subscribe once I've moved house, so I just get regular deliveries.

If you smoke, and you really wish you didn't, and wanted to stop, or if you are just sick and tired of being sent outside to smoke, get yourself a Vapestick, there's no smoke, that means its safe and entirely legal to "smoke" anywhere at all.

There's no doubt about it, Vaping (the act of inhaling vapour) has saved my life.

Thank you very much to the lovely people at Vapestick for the sample.

Oh and if you're interested, if you buy a start up kit, you get a whole lot for your money. Everything you need to get you started, chargers, batteries, sample pack of ten Cartridges, charger, atomizers...

  1. Ehhh... I got offered the Vapestick too, but I don't have any real desire to quit smoking just yet so I turned it down. I feel like I'd need a real incentive to quit, like when I decide I want to have children. Really pleased for you though - well done :-)

When I DO quit, I probably will look into e-cigs. I always thought to myself that I'd be able to do it cold turkey but I always start getting a bit twitchy if I go more than a few hours without a smoke these days so I don't think I could.

    Thanks for this post!

    1. Yes, definitely worth bearing in mind for future, but also worth having, I have smoker friends who use these on nights out so they don't have to go outside, but smoke normal cigarettes the rest of the time!

  2. Bloody hell, well done you what an achievement! I am impressed that these bits of kit work so well - this review is better than any amount of paid for advertising, they should shower you in Chanel as a thank you!!

  3. Congrats on giving up the cigs! My husband has a vapestick and he loves it. He's a bit wary of using it in public because not too many people are aware of them and they tend to stare a lot

  5. I just came across this article and wondered if you had seen it. After originally reading this post, I almost recommended the e-cigs to a friend of mine who has struggled to give up smoking for years. Fortunately I had not gotten around to mentioning it to her as, after reading the article, I would not like to recommend anything to her which is unregulated. I hate cigarettes but at least they are something of a known quantity in comparison to the electronic versions.

    1. yes, firstly it's the Daily Mail, say no more.

But really, I think its absolute nonsense. Of course the UK government are warning against them, the amount of money they stand to lose from smokers not smoking cigarettes is enormous, and probably already in decline. The biggest risk is to tax revenue.

For a start, with e-cigs you choose the strength of nicotine...well for most of the refillable ones anyway.

Of course everyone should make informed decisions about things such as these and I did a considerable amount of research before I got my first one, and still continue to learn now. I think there is absolutely no chance that an e-cig will be anything like as deadly as a cigarette, but that's based on my own reading and weighing up the info I have read and of course, everyone should do the same and make their own decisions, but would strongly advise not doing so in the Daily Mail!

The Daily Mail are famed for this sort of thing. This is well worth a look for the sort of scaremongering they regularly get up to.http://hellokinsella.posterous.com/the-daily-mail-list-of-things-that-give-you-c xxx

  6. Charlie I just KNEW you'd say that about the DM :-) I know their (crappy) reputation goes before them.

Seriously though, I didn't mean to suggest you are/were ill-informed, I just wanted to bring your attention to the article in case there may be a bit of truth in it...no smoke without fire :-) Thanks for posting the comment and your feedback. I'm off to read that link you left for me and in the meantime I'll encourage my mate to go back for a hypnotherapy top up and give up the evil weed that way again.

    Much love

  7. No honey, don't worry I didn't think that at all and thanks for taking my reply in the spirit it was meant, it was just by chance that today one of the companies put up their thoughts about all this, which makes for interesting reading, which of course is biased, but still interesting.

And yes, I think giving up nicotine altogether is by far the best option if possible! xx
