Good Hair Accessories

Gosh I've had these things for months now and haven't blogged about them yet. Shocking!

Okay so I bought these Goody hair accessories when they was a Three-for-Two offer on at Boots I think, ages ago.

Okay so starting with the Spin Pins. Now I have two cheap spin pins that I bought off Ebay. They were not great quality and wouldn't hold my hair up too well but I'd heard such great things about spin pins that I felt sure the Goody ones were better. And indeed they were. They hold my hair up fairly well BUT, two are not enough for my hair. I have very fine hair but I have tonnes of the stuff, so I tend to need to use the two Goody ones and then add one of the cheapies I had previously bought just to add a bit more strength to my up do. It's weird, I've never liked how ponytails or buns look on me, so this sort of messy up do is right up my street, it's also quick and easy to do.  You literally twist your hair into a sort of bun and then skewer them with the pins, one in from each end. Because I have a lot of shorter layers in my hair I think it's the reason the third pin holds more of my hair in place. It is definitely my opinion that it is worth paying for the Goody versions of these rather than the cheap versions I bought originally.

Then we've got the Goody Doublewear headbands and ponytail bands. The reason these are called Doublewear is that they are nice enough looking to be able to wear them around your wrists or neck as jewellery so they are on hand for those moments you just need to get your hair off your face.  The pony tail ones I've found excellent, they are stretchy enough, they don't snap, they look decent around my wrist and they look stylish in my hair. A great product. The headbands were not a success at all for me though.  For a start I think they look naff around my neck. Like some kind of 80's throwback but not in a good way but secondly and and more importantly whilst they hold my hair back just fine, they hurt, after about half an hour of wear my head starts to hurt and the pain gets worse until I just remove the damn things. I'm not sure what it is but I think it's partly the thin metal digging into my scalp and partly because the band is just too tight and I have quite a normal sized head (I do!!).

Soooo it's a yes from me to the screws but you might need more than one pack if you have a lot of hair or a lot of layers, and its a yes to the wrist/ponytail bands. It's an absolute no no to the headbands!

If however you fancy trying them out I got mine from Boots, although it seems they only have the Spin Pins online at the moment, I got mine in store so you may have more luck there.

Lola by Marc Jacobs

I have been admiring this scent for a long long time. When wandering through beauty halls, it is Lola I spritz on most often and it truly is a beautiful scent.
Lets just start with the fact I have a daughter named Lola (and a Chloe) so I feel a special draw to both of those perfumes, but in the case of Lola, it's not just the name I'm drawn to it is of course the absolutely beautiful bottle. The purple glass, the gold neck and writing and then of course the beautiful flower perched on top. It makes the bottle as much of an ornament as it is a receptacle for fragrance.

About the scent itself, we've got pink peppercorn, pear, ruby red grapefruit, with heart notes of rose, fuschia peony and geranium and base notes of vanilla, warm tonka bean and creamy musk. What is not to love?

In terms of longevity, I don't find this lasts a huge amount of time on me, but it's certainly not too quick to fade either, it's just about right, and then there's the sillage... I think this is deceptive, it doesn't seem to be massively overpowering, or dominating, but I think it throws out more scent than I think it does. I don't think that's a bad thing, I like people to smell me (in a good way) before they see me and I don't think the scent is one that could offend people although it is heavy on the pepper.

I love it.As always for most things, I'd recommend Escentual as there are great discounts.
30ml is £31.45 (£5.55 less than RRP), 50ml is £39.95 (£7.05 less than RRP) and 100ml is £53.55 (£9.45 less than RRP).

I have Dot by Marc Jacobs next in my line of sight. Dragonfruit, jasmin and vanilla, all in a ladybird bottle? Yes please!

Clinique vs Spots 1-0

It's a constant battle with me. Spots. I'm never without at least one big one going on and things come to a head (ha ha) usually the week before I'm due on. And it really varies how many I might get, but they do tend to stick around for a while, at least a week, maybe two.

Seriously it's an ongoing battle. Am currently in the process of tackling my skincare ritual (anti spot regimes just don't suit me because I don't have teenage or oily skin) and I have been relying on Origins Super Spot Remover on actual blemishes which I previously loved, but as time goes on it seems to be less and less effective for me where once it did seem to be super powered...

Step forward Clinique.
In particular I'm talking about the Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Spot Treatment Gel (£13.50) and the Anti-Blemish Solutions Post Blemish Formula (£12).

The Spot Treatment gel really is incredibly super powered, so far, the best spot product I've ever tried. Now I'm not actually supposed to use spot products that work by drying out the spot (as I have dehydrated skin), but honestly, I'd rather put up with a tiny patch of flaky dry skin that a spot. And this zaps spots super fast. Now like most spot treatments (over the counter ones at least), it doesn't get rid of big cystic type spots, I don't believe anything but medication really can, but I swear to god this seems to reduce them slightly faster. You know how long those buggers stick around for, they do seem to last less time with a dab of this stuff morning and night. It is a gel and it dries very quickly and I've had no issues with putting make up on over the top, the make up just looks as good as it does without the gel.

It's a great price and you only need such a minute amount it will last a very very long time. So for me, it's bye bye Origins and hello Clinique.

So you know when a spot heals and it can leave a little mark or a little patch of discolouration? Well then the next step is The Post Blemish Formula. It's a little twist up pen type product with a thin cream. You apply it to the marks and they reduce, quite significantly. I've found that it works very well on new blemishes, fading them very quickly, it does also work with old marks, but they take much longer to fade the scars. There is one gripe with this product. Whilst it's reasonably priced at £12, there's only 1.8g of product there, if you suffer with a lot of spots, this isn't going to last you long at all. If you just have the odd one now and then, it'll last you a long time if you're careful. I'm neither extreme, and I'm using only the tiniest amount having been prewarned (by reviews on the Clinique website) and so far so good.

Both of these will be staples for me I think. Brilliant products, reasonably priced.

Both available from your local Clinique Counter, or www.clinique.co.uk. Both highly recommended.

Jo Malone London Blackberry and Bay

There's a new fragrance joining the Jo Malone London cologne joining the range this Autumn and it's one I really love. Perhaps my favourite that I've tried to date. It's not just the fragrance I love, but the feelings it evokes and also the stunning imagery.
I always talk about how rubbish I am at describing scents, and it's true.

The press release reads:

Childhood memories of blackberry pricking...stained lips and sticky palms.

A burst of deep, tart blackberry juice and sparkling grapefruit, blending with the freshness of just-gathered bay. Softened with delicate flowers, resting on a brambly base of vetiver and cedarwood.

There's not a whole lot to add to this really. It does smell nostalgic, it does smell autumnal, it does smell beautiful and unusual and it is absolutely beautiful. I've worn it a quite a lot since receiving the sample but I can see me living in this once Autumn really hits. Despite the vetiver and cedarwood, and of course the fruity blackberry tang, there's more than a hint of grapefruit which I think adds a touch of brightness.

You must sniff this, it certainly won't be to everyone's taste but I do think everyone should try it!

According the release I have here, if combining is your thing, try it with a spritz of Lime Basil and Mandarin or with Nectarine Blossom & Honey.

Personally, I don't think I'd want to mix this, I love it just how it is. I wouldn't say no to a pot of the matching Body Creme. I'm very much in love with my Lime Basil and Mandarin Creme, the texture is amazing and I wouldn't mind adding a layer of the Blackberry and Bay Creme before the fragrance. (Graham if you're reading this, this is a heavy hint for you!)

The Cologne is available in either 30ml or 100ml bottles and is priced at £38 and £76 respectively. There is also the Body Creme at £48, a Body and Hand Wash at £30 and finally the Home Candle at £38.

Sorted for Summer with Philips

You may think Summer has been and gone. You may think Summer never came at all and still won't or you might be pessimistic and think the best is yet to come! Either that you're planning travels to hot places for a holiday soon.

Philips have got some fab gadgets to get you Summer ready, but really, the following are all year round as far as I'm concerned!

First up, the Philips Avance Juicer. The Rolls Royce of juicers probably.

Not only did I receive the juicer but also a big bag of fruit and veg with which to make my first three smoothies.

The first one I tried was Summer Lovin', parsnip, pear, pink lady apples...

Chloe wasn't sure, I thought it was utterly lovely, very refreshing and it felt very virtuous!

Next was Summer Slimmer, cucumber, apple, celery, ginger, truly it was revolting.

I didn't even attempt to make the third since it involved beetroot.... but we're not here to talk about the recipes, the machine was an absolute breeze to use and of course, not only did it come with a a full recipe book but of course you could just use combinations you think you'd actually like. Which is what I've been doing since.

It juices things so fast and efficiently, all you're left with is container of residue, almost like little balls of playdough. Literally all the goodness has been removed.

It looks stylish on your counter and its very very easy to clean and put back together. The only thing I'd say is that it is very big. It has a huge feeding tube making it easy to just put in whole fruits with out chopping, but it adds some height to an already massive thing.... if you're not going to juice often and take it seriously, i.e. leave it out on the counter on the counter at all times, you may find it a bit of a chore to get in and out of cupboard. Otherwise, I think this is fab bit of kit. But.... it's an investment at £200. Currently though, it's £149 on www.juicemaster.com. I've been using mine for breakfast every day. Love it!

Next, the Philips SatinSoft  Epilator.

I've been toying with epilating for a long time but two things put me, the first thing being extreme pain and secondly, I've heard tales of ingrown hairs being a problem with epilating. So I'll tell you about how the SatinSoft epilator works first. It's a wet and dry epilator, meaning you can use it in the shower (recommended), but it also comes with a shave head, so you can use it as a shaver. There are also a few extras, the recharging cable, an attachment that sort of massages your skin to make it less painful as you go along, one that is a trimmer, to just shorten hair and a third that narrows the area that is epilated, making it more suitable for bikini lines and  armpits. And then there's also a brush, it's recommended that you brush your epilated skin, or legs in particular, every other day to help prevent ingrown hairs.

Okay, so I won't beat about the bush, the first time I used this I found it absolutely agonising. Seriously, it really really hurt. I was in the shower, with the massagey attachment and I nearly couldn't finish my second leg, I swear to god I was nearly in tears. BUT, the next time I used it, the time after, better again, and I won't lie, it always hurts a little bit, but it's absolutely bearable. My legs are super smooth and hair free and I just run over them every two or three days, meaning I never have to start out like that first time, with fully hairy legs! It's much less painful to remove a few short hairs than it is all of the hair!

As for those ingrown hairs, yes, I have had a few...I have to admit though, whilst I'm vigilant about removing the hair every few days I've not been quite so good about the brushing in between, moving forward I'm going to try much harder.

Overall, I love epilating, I much prefer a quick one minute run over with the epilator every couple of days to shaving my legs fully every two days. Its quick easy, and convenient and I can't see me ever shaving my legs again. This Epilator is available from www.Boots.com and is priced at £99.99 but if you have a good look around there are a variety of cheaper Philips epilators on the site.  Well worth it, no pain no gain!

The final bit of kit is the Bikini Perfect kit.

Okay, then this is another product you can use wet and dry and it's also an epilator and razor. Now I'm going to say straight off that it comes with templates with which you can design your lady garden... I have not done this, novelty body hair is not my thing! Nor have I tried the epilator on my bikini line. I'm just not brave enough to go there. What I have done is used the various attachments. You can use the trimmer first of all with a guard on to shorten the length, then, remove the guard and remove the hair, and then finally use the foil attachment to get smooth. Now I have to say this was super smooth. The smoothest shave I've ever had with any electrical shaver on any part of my body. Very impressive. Unfortunately, a couple of days later I got a terrible shaving rash. So I'm wondering if there's a way around this for me, I am extremely sensitive in that area at the best of times. And I've been reading excellent reviews of this, so I don't know if there's a way round the rash for me, or if I'm never ever going to be able to shave my bikini line. :( If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear them because otherwise this is great and I think the problem is with me not the trimmer!

Of course you could use this anywhere too and it's a very reasonably priced £30.63 from Amazon.

So well done Philips, aside from the rash, I'm very impressed with all these gadgets. Very impressed.

Viva La (Skin) Revolution - Visage House Exeter

I recently told you about my visit to Visage House in Exeter, to try out CACI, the non-surgical face lift. I told all about CACI, what it is, how it feels and what results you can expect to receive.

Today I want to tell you about Visage House, Brenda Anvari's products and about the things I learned about my skin.

When I went for my appointment I nearly didn't spot Visage House. I actually walked past it twice...I was looking for your traditional beauty salon and I bypassed the gorgeous looking gift shop rammed full with elegant bottles and potions and jewellery.
Then I spotted where it was and headed in to a warm welcome, offers of a drink while I filled in a form and took in my surroundings and waited for my therapist Paula.

When Paula was ready I was ushered into the treatment room which was softly lit and there, in the middle was to all intents and purposes a bed. I'm sure it was the usual type of couch, but there was no mistaking the the big thick pink polka dot duvet. I was asked to remove my top, and shoes and to pull my bra straps down so that my shoulders and upper chest were uncovered, and then I hopped into bed and was tucked in. Very cosy it was too! Considering it was a very hot day, I didn't feel at all hot. I don't quite know how that worked, but the temperature was just dandy.

The last time I had a facial (at another salon), it was so hot and stuffy I left with a horrific migraine. This was absolutely fine. And I might add very comfortable.

So Paula asked me if I had any concerns about my skin, and I saw the opportunity to mention the bumps under my skin that have been plaguing me for so long now. I've tried so many things to be rid of them but nothing has worked. And in addition, I've never actually known what my skin type is as I never seemed to fall into any of the neat brackets. I have hormonal spots, I have dry patches around my nostrils, the bumps under my skin all around my jaw, chin and cheeks, and I'm in my late thirties so concerned about ageing.

Now I know what I am! So Paula decided to examine those bumps and told me that the contents would tell her exactly what condition my skin is in. And so she set about, well, I'm sure there's a technical term for it, but the best way I can describe it, is squeezing. It was fairly uncomfortable at times, and she only did a few because that wasn't why I was there. And so it is that the contents of my little bumps are hard. Which tells Paula, and me, that my skin is dehydrated, other factors, based on our discussions, also presented the us with the fact that my skin is sensitive.

This is the best picture I could find of  "the bumps"... I think you can just see my cheeks and chin aren't smooth.

I cannot tell you how delighted I am to learn this. I know it sounds weird to learn your skin has a few problems, but it's not, the fact is that once you know what the problem is, you can go about fixing it. Before now I've been fumbling around blindly trying to treat my spots, care for the dry bits, and worrying about ageing. All of which I've been doing and probably making things worse in the process.

So, the way forward for me is to have a deep pore cleansing facial, in which she'll clear out all of those blocked pores and to strip back my routine to cut out all heavy moisturisers, all anti ageing products, all spot creams, just everything and go right back to basics with the most simple products... and then and only then, when my skin is clearer and less bumpy and reactive, then start adding in anti ageing products where necessary. And of course, the recommended products are Brenda Anvari products.

Now Brenda Anvari is the owner of Visage House, but for many years Brenda worked for Elizabeth Arden, training therapists all over Europe, before moving with Elizabeth Arden to New York to look after their US Salons, train all new therapists and to develop new treatments and so she bought a great wealth of experience and knowledge with her when she opened her own salon in Exeter. Along with the salon is a great range of products, for your skin, for your body and for scenting your home. And what I've tried is so beautiful I'm convinced enough to be ditching everything I've previously used.

I was lucky enough to be sent home with the Skin Tonic and the skin serum, both of which I've only been using for a week now but so far so good. The Skin Tonic is a floral water toner to balance and stimulate the regeneration process, it's also calming and so perfect for my sensitivities. 100% pure, no added ingredients, . No parabens. Gorgeous rose product my skin loves. I've been naughty, very rarely toning, now I'm religiously toning twice a day. This is £15.95.

Then there's the fab Skin Serum which is also rose, it's a perfectly clear gel form, that feels slightly sticky when I apply it but absorbs so quickly into my skin it fails to cause any issue. It's all free and infused with antioxidants and essential oils and seems to be calming a my skin quite well. After my pore clearing and and CACI, I did suffer quite an outbreak (because I have reactive and sensitive skin and it was also that time of the month) and I believe the two products I was sent home with have really helped to calm the break out also.

I can't afford to replace my whole regime with Brenda Anvari's products, yet so I will be replacing one by one as and when I can afford it, so at the moment am reaching for the most basic bits in my collection to compliment the above two products, and I'm giving away anything fancy, rich, full of ingredients I don't need. I'll also be back in to the Salon for my Deep Pore Cleansing Facial.

Regarding the skincare products used on me during my facial, I must give special mention to the Sicilian Lemon cleanser which smelled and felt wonderful,  and also the Facial Exfoliating Cleanser.  Stunning.

And before I round up this super long post I must also give mentions to the body care line, I was given an arm and hand massage using a body cream which comes in several stunning varieties, I opted for Pomegranate, Raspberry and Patchouli (as stunning as  I thought it would be), but other options included Lime, Mandarin and Grapefruit, Orange Blossom, Persian Rose and Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood and Black pepper. The last one is what I'll choose next time!

Finally there is also a beautiful range of home fragrance products in all of the above scents and Cranberry, Orange and Cinnamon.... I'm thinking they will make wonderful Christmas Presents.

Whilst those of you not local to Exeter can't very easily go along to Visage House for a treatment (if you are local, you should) but should any of the products take your fancy, you can buy them all from the Visage House website. Delivery is a hefty £6.25 per order, but I understand that all items are sent by courier.

Amazing. My skin is already seeing the benefits and when I move house (have I mentioned I'm moving imminently??) then I'm going to ensure the house is beautifully scented too.

*Disclosure - products mentioned were received free of charge*

Liz Earle Natural Glow Bronzer and Healthy Glow Powder Blush

So I tried out a couple of the new Liz Earle colour cosmetics a few months ago, namely a lip gloss and the concealer. Both products were really nice, but they didn't rock my world as I just didn't find them that exciting. Quality wise, they were great, but I did struggle to find things to say about them, not because there was anything wrong with them, there was nothing wrong with them, but they just weren't that exciting and I do like to get excited about make up.

I am pleased to say I now have something from the line to be excited about, namely the Healthy Glow Powder Blush in Nectar and the Natural Glow Bronzer. Both are extremely lovely indeed.

Love the simple presentation for a start.

Both products are excellent, but the blusher is really special indeed. Along with foundation and brow products, blushers are my favourite cosmetic obsession and this has sky rocketed to the top of my charts.  The blusher is £16.50, so not especially cheap, but worth it. The Blusher is available in seven shades, and I don't think Nectar could be any more perfect. Such a healthy pop of peachy pink colour. It  builds well, it blends well, it delivers heaps of colour and I should think would work on most skin tones. Truly a gorgeous  product. There is a hint of shimmer, nothing obvious, more of a glow I think.

Then there's the Natural Glow Bronzer, again at £19.50 it's not cheap but it performs very well. Pigment is excellent but it applies sheerly enough to build it up where you want it, and the colour is perfect for my pale skin.  There is shimmer this time, but it's barely there shimmer. You really have to look for it. Perfect. I don't like shimmery bronzers as a rule, except for evenings.

Swatches of joyousness.

And the products on my face.  my current favourite look, defined brows, mascara and Liz Earle cheeks, usually some gloss but I forgot to put it on for these pictures.

Gorgeous stuff, makes me excited to try more of the range now!

Both items are available from the Liz Earle website now.

Lancome La Vie Est Belle

Life is Beautiful! A mantra I should repeat frequently to myself to remember all the good things.... not just a great message but also Lancome's latest fragrance.

Lancome's La Vie Est Belle
Such a pretty bottle. Be aware that this is a small sample size bottle, not the full size but it is a replica of the full size bottle, so when I say this is a gorgeous bottle, that applies to this miniature and the full size.

The first thing that I thought when I opened this beauty was how like a Lancome fragrance it was. Not that they've produced anything like it before, just, well it just smells quintessentially Lancome!

This is apparently an Iris gourmand. I don't know, its just beautiful. There's Iris, orange blossom, patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean, praline, blackcurrant, pear and I love it.

It's sweet, but it's not too sweet, the iris and patchouli temper the sweetness somewhat, but the blackcurrant is detectable.

It's almost like Lancome set about designing a perfume just for me, but actually, this is really a very mainstream scent and I think it will be extremely popular with many people. In terms of strength, well it lasts for hours on me and whilst people standing close to me have asked what I'm wearing, I'm not filling the room with my scent either! Perfect.

I predict this will be a best seller for Lancome, it's a very pleasing every day scent.

Available from Selfridges now, with prices starting from £39.

CACI - The Non-Surgical Facelift

I recently trotted off to Visage House for a session of CACI, aka The Non-Surgical Face Lift.

The experience was so exceptional on so many levels that I'm going to break the whole event down into two posts. The first, about the CACI experience and results, with another post in a couple of days about the fabulous Visage House and owner Brenda Anvari's incredible products because I really feel that the salon, service, staff, products, deserve a blog post all of their own.

Firstly, CACI stands for  Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument and the CACI treatment is not designed to be a one off treatment and is in fact best  used as a course of at least ten sessions, or at least six. That said, you should see a difference after one session, but I don't think realistically you can expect to have one session and leave a salon looking as though you've had a face lift.

CACI aims to redefine the facial contours and tighten and tone sagging muscles, reduce and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, rejuvenate your skin and the principle of the treatment is to re-educate the muscles. The way it works is using a micro-current delivered through a hand held device, which works with the body's own bio electrical flow to help regeneration in muscle fibres. As well as muscles tightening, you can expect an increase in collagen and elastin.

Now I have to be honest, after the treatment (but not because of the treatment) I suffered a bit of a massive break out so I took all my before photographs without make up on...but I just couldn't do it afterwards, so after shots are with me wearing make up.

Before we get to photographs I want to tell you a bit about the CACI experience. I had to fill in the consultation form and was asked about any conditions I might have that they should be aware of, then i was very thoroughly cleansed toned and exfoliated with the most beautiful Brenda Anvari products (more on those in the next post, as I say, they deserve their own post).

Then I was talked through what would happen with the CACI, and what to expect. I was warned that there were a couple of temporary side effects that I might experience (and that I certainly did) and off we went. The experience was generally very relaxing, I was covered in a thick layer of rose scented gel-like serum and there were lots of long firm strokes over my face with a combination of sort of prongs and rollers. Here's me being pronged.
Ok, thats not me being done, I actually forgot to take my camera. Those are what I was treated with though, but I was lying down (in a bed with a duvet, I kid you not!). Those side effects, well there was a metallic taste in my mouth, not particularly unpleasant, not especially pleasant either, it was quite odd, and then there were flickering lights in my eyes, as though someone was repeatedly flashing a camera next to me. Again, it wasn't particularly bothersome. Certainly, during the whole process it wasn't uncomfortable or painful in any way, it was in fact very relaxing.

I was also provided with a couple of patches on each cheek which felt very much like the Slendertone Face unit I trialled a while ago, a slight twitching. Visage House usually add the patches in at about the fourth treatment, but  included them for me to have the "full experience".

The whole process was finished with a face mask with those lovely products and a hand and arm massage before being cleansed, moisturised and that was that.

Now it's hard for me to tell you much more about the process, but it was relaxing and brilliant.

In terms of results, have I seen any? Yes I have! No I don't look like I have had a facelift, but as I previously mentioned, I wouldn't expect that after one treatment. But there are certainly differences. Namely, I find everything looks a bit fresher, a bit tighter, and as my lovely therapist Paula said would be the case, I just had that look of being a bit more "chubby cheeked" and that's in a good way!

I previously mentioned that I suffered a break out so I am unwilling to show you my unmade up face in the after photographs, but hopefully you'll still see the fresher faced me.

The next two photos are the best to show the effect on my jaw line and chin area I think.

Again these show the subtle difference in my jowls area (sob! jowls!)

All in all I was very impressed with CACI and absolutely believe that if you paid for 10 sessions you would really see a fantastic result. Visage House tell me it is one of their most popular treatments and I can see why.

That said I won't be going back for more CACI because a course of ten, well it's £60 a session, and if you buy ten you get one free so you're looking at £540... little bit out of price range but still I would highly recommend, very effective and pleasant treatment.

That said, I'll definitely be going back to Visage House but you can read more about that in my Visage House post later this week.

This experience was provided to me free of charge and I would especially like to thank Brenda Anvari and Paula, for having me!

You can find your nearest CACI salon on here, along with lots of information about CACI.

If you are in Exeter or Devon, then look no further than Visage House.
